MACE Recognizes Hargrove Teammates at Annual Awards Banquet

Mar 28, 2015

On Feb. 26, the Mobile Area Council of Engineers (MACE) presented three Hargrove Engineers + Constructors Teammates with awards at its annual banquet at the Mobile County Club. Alex Bell, PE, was awarded Chemical Engineer of the Year, Jake Parker, PE, LEED AP, received the Electrical Engineer of the Year, and Carl Powell, PE, took home Mechanical Engineer of the Year. These awards recognize those who have contributed significantly to the engineering profession and to the technological and economic development in the Mobile area, the region, the nation, and the world throughout their engineering career.

Alex Bell, PE, is Hargrove Engineers + Constructor’s Mobile process engineering leader with expertise in plant design, operations, project management, and chemical engineering in the refining, foods, and specialty chemicals industries. Prior to joining Hargrove, he served as the plant manager for a food production plant, director of manufacturing and production superintendent for Evonik Degussa in Theodore, Ala., and as senior process design engineer for UOP Honeywell in Chickasaw, Ala. Bell has a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He served on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama for five years and was co-leader for three years of a youth counseling program for children of divorced parents sponsored by a local church ministry.

J. Jake Parker, PE, LEED AP, serves as Hargrove’s refining electrical and instrumentation engineering leader with experience on projects from estimation through construction, specification of major electrical equipment, design of detailed electrical and instrumentation systems, and project leadership. A Teammate since 2004, Parker has supported both greenfield and retrofit projects that support technological advancement and environmental improvements for clients in multiple industries, ranging from paper mill production increases utilizing recycled paper to refining projects to enhance waste handling and improved emissions control. He is an active member of the USA Alumni Association and served on the board of directors for HandsOn South Alabama.

Carl Powell, PE, is a senior pulp and paper process/mechanical engineer for Hargrove Engineers + Constructors with experience serving as project manager/process lead on major projects including converting expansions, optimization projects, winder line installations, material handling, and equipment installations. Prior to joining Hargrove, Powell served as the production manager for Sony Electronics, superintendent of technical services for Georgia Pacific, and as a Kimberly-Clark roll tissue converting and rewinder expert. Powell earned his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Auburn University. He is passionate about mentoring young engineers and is on the “A Team” for Jubilee BEST Robotics, helping to build – and sometimes design – the game field for a middle and high school robotics competition.

MACE also recognized the Airbus Final Assembly Line, U.S.A as the Project of the Year. The project not only gives direct economic stimulus to the Mobile area, but at least nine engineering design firms are impacted with different phases of the project. Hargrove serves as a construction administrator for a portion of the project.
